How to Design a Cross-Training Program for MT/PT

September 28, 2025

In the world of Non-Destructive Testing, versatility is a superpower. While specialization in advanced methods like Phased Array UT is critical, the foundation of most inspection jobs lies in surface examination. Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Penetrant Testing (PT) are the workhorse methods used across nearly every industry to detect surface-breaking flaws.

A technician certified in only one of these methods is valuable. A technician certified in both is an operational force multiplier.

Cross-training your NDT personnel in both MT and PT is one of the most effective ways to increase efficiency, flexibility, and employee value. A well-designed program creates a more agile workforce, reduces project bottlenecks, and demonstrates a commitment to professional growth. Here’s a step-by-step guide to building a compliant and effective MT/PT cross-training program.

Step 1: Lay the Foundation with Your Written Practice

Before you begin any training, your first step must be to consult and, if necessary, amend your company’s NDT Written Practice. This document is the cornerstone of your certification program and is the first thing an auditor will review.

  • What it Is: The Written Practice is your internal roadmap that details exactly how your company will train, qualify, and certify NDT personnel in accordance with industry standards like ASNT’s SNT-TC-1A or NAS 410. Certification of all NDT personnel is the responsibility of the employer.
  • Why it Matters: This document must explicitly define the minimum required classroom training hours and on-the-job experience hours for each method and level of certification. Without this documented framework, any training you conduct is non-compliant. Your Written Practice is the ultimate authority for your program.

Step 2: Structure the Formal Classroom Training

Once your Written Practice is in order, the next step is formal classroom education. This provides the foundational “why” behind the “how.” The training must cover the principles and theory of each method as outlined in documents like ASNT CP-105.

  • Curriculum: The training, whether conducted in-house by your Level 3 or through a third-party provider, should cover the fundamental principles, equipment, materials, techniques, and safety protocols for both MT and PT.
  • Required Hours: SNT-TC-1A provides recommended training hour guidelines. For a technician going for Level II, the recommendations are typically:
    • Penetrant Testing (PT): A total of 24 formal training hours are recommended to achieve Level II.
    • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): A total of 28 formal training hours are recommended to achieve Level II.
Your Written Practice will specify the exact hours your company requires.

Step 3: Implement a Robust On-the-Job Training (OJT) Plan

This is where theory meets practice. On-the-job training (OJT) is the most critical component of developing a competent inspector and must be structured, supervised, and meticulously documented.

  • Supervision: All OJT must be conducted under the supervision of a certified NDT Level II or Level III individual in that specific method. The trainee is learning, not just logging hours.
  • Document Everything: Create a formal OJT logbook for each trainee. This logbook should not just track hours; it should detail the specific tasks performed, such as equipment calibration, different techniques used (e.g., yoke, bench, visible, fluorescent), and the types of parts inspected. This creates an auditable record of competence.
  • Experience Hours: Again, SNT-TC-1A provides guidelines that should be reflected in your Written Practice. For Level II certification, the total recommended experience hours are:
    • Penetrant Testing (PT): 400 hours.
    • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): 530 hours.

Step 4: Administer and Document Comprehensive Examinations

The final gate before certification is a series of exams designed to verify the trainee’s knowledge and practical skill. These exams must be administered or overseen by a qualified NDT Level III.

  • Vision Exams: Before any other exam, the candidate must pass a near vision and color vision test to ensure they can adequately perceive indications.
  • General Exam: A closed-book, multiple-choice exam covering the fundamental principles and theory of the method.
  • Specific Exam: An open-book exam covering the company’s specific procedures, equipment, and specifications that the technician will be using.
  • Practical Exam: A hands-on test where the candidate must demonstrate their ability to properly operate the equipment, perform an inspection on prepared test specimens with known flaws, and correctly interpret and document the results. To pass, candidates typically must score at least 70% on each written exam and achieve a composite average of 80% or higher.

The Strategic Payoff of a Cross-Trained Team

Investing in a formal cross-training program yields significant returns. It creates a more flexible and efficient workforce, allowing you to deploy personnel more effectively during outages and complex projects. It also boosts employee morale and retention by providing a clear path for skill development and increased earning potential.

By building a program grounded in your Written Practice and focused on documented, hands-on experience, you move beyond simply “getting a cert” and start building a team of versatile, competent, and truly valuable NDT professionals.
